Software Engineer

Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Develop new site functionality according to spec
  • Work collaboratively with product and design team to ensure we create an exciting product
  • Create well-architected, maintainable code
  • Take ownership of your core functional area
  • Design database tables to support the front end
  • Optimize poorly performing parts of the application
  • Fix bugs and support QA activities

Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent degree
  • 2+ years of experience in developing database driven web applications preferred
  • Strong software engineering skills; know when to hack and when to refactor
  • Ability to quickly implement a functional spec to deployable code
  • Experience with PHP, MySQL, CSS, AJAX
  • Working knowledge of Linux, development tools (vim/emacs, grep, sed, etc.)
  • Proven ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing requirements

Plusses:

  • Knowledge of various web services/APIs
  • Experience building scalable web applications
  • Experience with Linux system administration

Backend Engineer

Scope and Responsibilities:

  • Establish infrastructure/procedures that minimizes scalability risks
  • Work with the engineering team to ensure each developer does their part for performance
  • Work with the product team to understand end user needs and tradeoffs
  • Identify problematic queries and implement creative solutions that preserve functionality
  • Profile relevant PHP code, identify and fix performance issues
  • Contribute to architecture, design and code reviews
  • Quantify trade-offs in caching / bandwidth / database accesses

Requirements:

  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent degree
  • 3+ years building scalable database driven web applications
  • Detailed understand of relational databases and experience with query optimization.
  • Experience with PHP
  • Proven ability to learn quickly
  • Working knowledge of Linux, development tools (vim/emacs, grep, sed, etc.)

Plusses:

  • Strength in developing and analyzing algorithms
  • MySQL Ninja skills
  • Ability to look at performance holistically, not just at the query level
